[CQ-Contest] Laptop Power

I'm getting into advanced stages of planning for the Ohio QSO Party.  I'm 
going out for the first serious mobile effort with my equipment.  To run the 
laptop (an IBM Thinkpad)  I have a small DC-AC inverter but expect RF noise 
problems.  

What DC power requirements do these computers have (e.g eliminate the AC 
supply and go direct from battery)?  Can these be met by some reasonable 
combination of batteries (gel-cells in series, etc.)?  What precautions does 
one need to follow to keep from frying the laptop, etc.?  Where might one 
find the little 4-pin connectors power  these computers use?
