At the risk of adding to the QRM I would like to reference an article by
WM2C in the April 1996 issue of CQ Contest titled: "Mulit-Single Rules and
Strategies in the CQ Worldwide Contest" In this article Ken/WM2C reviews a
wide variety of tips and tricks for the M/S that "...all adhere to the
contest rules and are considered to reflect good sportsmanship...".
In a section covering "Advanced Techniques" Ken wrote: "Now let's call CQ on
the MULT station and run some stations on the second transmitter! I know
what you're thinking: 'That's not allowed!' But you can run on the MULT
station if you count the non-mult QSO's as zero points when calculating your
score. Why would anyone do this? Because of the potential of attracting
mults that will only answer your CQ. It is a tradeoff between having new
mults call and and working non-mult stations that you can't work again later
for points. When does this pay off? Generally, when you start multing on a
new band. ... The only good time to run on your mult band is when you start
multing a new band, or you know there's very limited propogation and that
the chance is high you'll work mostly new mults."
At NK7U this year we needed Alaska/Zone 1 on 160M for a double mult and I
called CQ for 20 minutes or so hoping to attract one. During that time I had
two XE's and a few stateside stations call in. They are in the log and
marked as zero points. I felt quite proper in doing this.
