I doubt that there will ever be a "standard CW configuration." In fact, I
believe that there is a competitive advantage to be gained from tuning the
bands in the opposite direction that everyone else tunes the bands. It's a
little like being a left handed batter against predominantly right handed
pitchers. In response to the statistical truths of baseball, professional
baseball has become remarkably balanced by comparison to the population as a
whole, with nearly as many left handed players as right handed players.

>From years of contesting in multioperator situations, I'd say that most
habitually tune across the bands forcing signals to descend in pitch in
their headsets. Many DX contesters habitually tune from the bottom of the
band upwards regardless of the observed pitch changes. CW using LSB
detection is uncomfortable for these operators -- in a multiop situation
they might start at the bottom of the band and work upwards until habit gets
the better of them and they turn around and revisit all of the signals they
previously contacted during their upward sweep. Right handed operators in
the pencil and paper days used to tune receivers with their left hands --
and the natural tuning motion was therefore a counterclockwise twist of the
know with a downward flick of the wrist. Old-time receivers with slide rule
dials most often tuned down frequency with this motion, so were more
typically set up to tune CW signals on LSB. This is the opposite of the DX
contester's habitual action, causing the tuning to move from the top of the
band to the bottom. Most experienced operators from the old days have been
through many generations of radios, so have been forced to change habits
many times.

The real problem embodied in the "How close is too close?" question isn't a
"passband centering" issue. Instead, it's a question of relative received
signal strengths that are being observed in the receivers of two contesters
on adjacent channels. For one competitor, the typical response to a CQ may
be a very loud station, such as would be observed in KC1XX's receiver when
beaming Europe during the first 24 hours of the contest. 500 Hz up the
band, NK7U may be attempting to hear Europeans at the same time. His
antenna farm is competitive, but his lack of proximity to Europe makes it
difficult for him to hear responses in the presence of the KC1XX signal.
