Well, it seems as if the genie has to be out of the bottle before people
will get around to seriously discussing some issues. For example, it took
the cloning of Dolly to get people seriously thinking about what
limitations or standards should be applied to that technology.

For that reason ... I am pleased to announce the First Robot Op
Competition. I will award a handsomely engraved plaque to the first person
whose robot operator autonomously achieves 2 million points in the CQWW CW
Contest.

Detailed draft rules follow (comments are welcome, of course):

1. Competition for this award will begin with the 2000 running of the CQWW
CW Contest, and the award will remain offered until claimed.

2. No human intervention in the operation of the station during the
contest is permitted, other than rebooting of computer(s) or restarting of
station equipment in the event of power interruption or other external
disruption. All band changes, antenna switching, packet interfacing and
operating will be done exclusively by the robot op.

3. Stations will compete in the Single Op Assisted category. Logs will be
submitted to CQ for scoring without any indication that they were generated
by a robot operator, and results will therefore be validated on a blind
basis through the CQWW Contest Committee log checking process.

Following the publication of the contest results, any person wishing to
apply for the award may submit an application to the undersigned, including:

1. A full copy of the log file as submitted to CQ.
2. A full copy of the UBN report provided by CQ on the log.
3. A statement of the final score as determined by CQ.
4. A certification that the result has been achieved without human
intervention other than that outlined above.
5. A technical description of the robot op system sufficient to permit an
impartial technical expert(s) to judge the credibility of the claimed result.
6. An offer to permit a visit to the station by an impartial expert(s)and
a full demonstration of the capabilities of the system.

In addition to the plaque, I will endeavor to publicize the winner's
accomplishment in amateur radio publications worldwide.

Good luck!
