Regarding operating split: I don't think this is a cure-all for the problem
of idiot blind callers.  There are many individual variables which have to
be considered - like your QTH, your frequency, and how loud you are in your
target area.

Also, I think in a DX contest it is not a preferred practice becaue it does
require more bandwitdh.

When I did it, I only did it as a last resort.  It works well if you're
really in trouble (like if your signal is really weak in your target area
on that band).
