With respect, Tom, yes there is - a very good reason - pile-up control. A
skilled pile-up operator can control the ferocity of his pileup, and thus
maximise his rate, by selective IDing.

It's not just that you save time by not IDing, it's that when you don't ID
for a couple of QSOs, fewer stations will call you and you stand more chance
of getting a full call first time - which has to be the objective to
maximise your rate.

I like to use a variation on this in Phone contests - vary the speed with
which you give your call, and the use or otherwise of phonetics, to manage
how many people call. You really can hear the pileup increase when you give
a nice slow phonetic ID.

I realise this may be frustrating for the S&P op. But I can only work one
station at once - the only effect the rest of the pileup has is to slow me
down, and the quicker I can go, the quicker I'll get around to hearing your
call...
