Packet assist could be caught if it was desired. Just set up a time
correlation scheme between the cluster spots and the mults the "unassisted"
works. If you see that an unassisted runs over 100 per hour and works the
new mults within 5 minutes they show up in the cluster, you can be sure that
unassisted station is actually assisted.
Some years ago I did the following: I picked out a frequency in WWCW very
high in the 15m novice band, set the gear to 10W, selected the 10m vertical
and started to call CQ as HB0/DL....../P knowing that contest there was no
HB0 around. Within half an hour I made 5 QSOs with EUs only. Then I telneted
to one of the East Coast clusters as KA... and spotted myself. Within a
quarter of an hour I worked 10-15 NAs including some of the most prominent
unassisted SOs from the East Coast.
