Here is what keeps me interested in contesting:

As you state below, competing against myself (last year's score) and
similarly equipped stations (used to be Chuck but he's out of my league
now).

Incrementally building a better station, all the while knowing I'll
probably never even put up a tower.  In other words, seizing every cheap
or free dB I can.

Having a couple of M/S's at my shack every year.  Watching KF4GNV and
KD4BAM handle their first runs and do it well are high points of MY
contest career.

Beating the odds when it comes to stamina and persistence.  You don't
think I go to the gym all the time to look good....obviously not.

Fellowship of the contest community, hanging out with the likes of the
great ZZ and ON4UN, some of the expertise is bound to rub off
eventually.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, Shoney's Breakfast Bar and Old Country Buffet.
