The absolute equal playing field is a pure utopia and finally it only leads
to the death of a real Ham radio contesting.
Like it or not, but an operator can't become a top contest operator without
a station that fully allows his talent to emerge and an average contest
operator can't be a winner independently where he is located or what he
uses.
Ham radio is an activity that implies and incentivate knowdledge and, strict
or not, there are examinations to get a licence. We have bands because we
are not only operators or users, but people that's presumed able to
understand something thecnical and has interests in multiple aspects of
wireless communications, not only because of good hears or able to key fast.
Back to contesting, to find out that a monobander is better than a
tribander, or a beverage better than a vertical to receive 160m, is just
another part of the operator skill and an incentive to development, a reason
to believe in enhancements and finally the will to partecipate contesting
year after year. Same sign of increased skill is the will to use all the
allowed devices that permit the operator to develop a more effective
strategy. Another sign of skill is to move into a competitive area or
country if the aiming became that of an absolute victory.
When one get's convinced nothing else has to be improved and only hands,
mouth and hears are the discriminant, the investment in getting bored of
contesting is on the way to pay back.
