[CQ-Contest] 3 QSO penalty

As long as everyone is assessed the same penalty, that's fair. The only thing that's brought this matter to the fore is the same thing that makes it an even more fair process: computerized log checking. Before, few complained about the 3Q penalty because odds were good you weren't getting caught. Now every bad QSO is caught and dinged.

(And just to those who haven't been paying attention: It's a representative amount of QSO points that get deleted, not actual QSOs, so your multipliers are safe, unless the bad QSO was a multiplier, in which case you aren't entitled to that mult anyway.)

But what it also means is that now, perhaps more than ever, the best operators win.

Isn't that what we WANT?

Who cares if your score gets reduced? So did the next guy's. And so did the winner's. So your relative place in the standings (it's all relative, isn't it?) isn't affected. So don't worry. Worry about that flaky PL259 on the top tribander or whether its time to send the ole 286 to the junk heap and upgrade the station computer or whether you need more practice (I'm not saying YOU do, it's just an example) or about whether radio 2 is best set to the left of radio 1 or vice-versa or if putting 2 on top of 1 is better.

There are so many things you can worry about that WILL have an affect on your relative place in the standings that I don't see the point about worrying about things that WON'T.

And I think the principles of sportsmanship demand that our logs be as honest a representation of our efforts as possible. And that includes being a man and taking our medicine when we screw up and not abandoning values of honesty and integrity just because someone else may abandon his or never had them in the first place.

We're on our honour when we submit a log. We should strive to ensure we deserve that honour.

That ought to be engraved on a plaque and displayed prominently above
every operating position in RadioSport-dom.
