I feel that there needs to be a time parameter as to who are the best ops.
Certainly W4KFC was a great op
in the 1940's to 1960's. Just as N5KO, K1AR, and W4AN are today. Then
there are K3ZO and K4BAI who have been consistent
for years....
Being a phone operator I have marveled at K6EVR in the ARRL phone SS, KH6IJ
in just about anything or any mode, G3DO, OH5SM,
and EA2CA working both AM and SSB while at Ifni using an old KWM1...his pile
up was from 14200 to 14300 with Am on the lower 50Khz and SSB on the upper
side (this was 1959 and before the USA had 14300 to 350). The big
difference is that most of the gang who came up in the 50's and 60's were
into traffic handling too (such as K2KIR, K4BAI, K4BVD [W6OAT], K4RIN[W5XX],
W4KFC, K5IIN, K5QNF[W2RF], and many others. We also had to be wizards at
dup log keeping so ARRL or W1WY would not shout at us! Now the computer
does just about everything.
I someone must list best operators then let's list them by say decade
starting with the 1940's ....For me if someone can win a major contest for
his or her country or state/province that speaks volumes for operator
ability. getting into the top 10 is the icing on the cake.
An operator not into public service is missing a slice of amateur radio..be
it traffic handing, emergency service, or helping to administer a contest.
