You are hurting yourself for no reason.

If you get his call correct, but he busts your call, 
leave it in the log!  You will still get the QSO 
points (unless he busts by two characters...) and he 
still gets dinged.  No need to purge your log.

BTW, *pure* uniques are not penalized in most 
contests.  Not sure why this misconception keeps 
rearing its ugly head.
