My response:

I think ascribing motives for people's behavior is risky at best.
I can describe my motives.  I don't know about other people.

I operate SO2R because I am trying to win.  In the process I have
found it to be quite a lot of fun.  New challenges, even for
contest dinasours like me, can be good.  I believe this point
has been made quite a few times by others.

My first SO2R was with a borrowed TS-930 feeding a borrow GAP vertical.
No filters, special switches.  Just a few hundred feet of RG-8X.
I didn't feel very much like a playground bully with that setup.  :-)
