Re phonetics.....just a comment, no flames intended.
Many years ago, in the early 50's, ICAO (International Civil Aviation
Organization) after a number of years consultation with
members of the organization which, as I remember, represented
all countries, devised a standard alphabet that eliminated much
confusion with the existing phonetics among several non-English
speaking nations
The new alphabet replaced the old army etc., Able Baker Charlie
Dog etc. The basic objective of the ICAO alphabet was to eliminate
words that were confusing to some nations.
Those who were/are involved in aviation will probably recall these
proceedings.
