I just looked up the definition of athlete in my Merriam Dictionary.

...to contend for a prize:  a person who is trained or skilled in exercises,
sports or games requiring physical strength, AGILITY or STAMINA. (my caps)

There we have it.  Even if you have a spare tire big enough to put on an
18-wheeler, you can consider yourself an athlete if you are a contester.
