I would love a 12 hour category! So far I can only manage about 8 hours
before I get distracted or bored. It's not because I'm too old, but
probably because I'm too young. :) The long exchange is GREAT, I love it.

SS right after WW SSB is not the greatest either.

In answer, what's going on is this:

"the average age of contesters gets older" (your words)

As we become more experienced en-masse, and we
get shorter callsigns and build nicer stations, our ability
to generate higher rates at the beginning of the contest
improves. At the same time, "the average age of
contesters gets older" (your words) primarily because
younger contesters aren't entering the contesting ranks
fast enough to offset the aging of the average
contesters. Thus, there's a shortage of inexperienced
contesters to contact in the final hours of the conflict.
The result is that the beginning of the contest is a
surge of high rates with everyone feeling great about
their results. But at the end of the contest, with fatigue
setting in we are generally unprepared for the dearth
of stations available to be contacted. Then "the
average age of contesters gets older" (your words),
and fatigue sets in with more and more certainty.

Truthfully we're never going to solve this problem with
rules changes. We all talk about possible rules changes,
but the solution isn't to be found with rules changes.
The problem is that "the average age of contesters gets
older" (your words), and you can't enforce rules against
getting older (except, perhaps, we can hopefully enforce
a rule against Osama bin Laden getting much older, but
that's another thread).

Maybe we just need to work on improving the
averages.

A few years ago Sports Illustrated (yes, the guys who do the swimsuit
issue) had a great article about radiosport contesting.
