Someone did a Ph.D. thesis back in the mid-70's on LDE's;  I believe it
was from Stanford University.  It was a fascinating theory that explained
them in terms of an electromagnetic wave coupling to a slow mechanical
wave in the ionosphere and then returning to an electromagnetic wave under
certain conditions.  The person had actually done some testing to
determine the validity of his theory and had observed LDE's under the
conditions he predicted would cause them.

I have heard them several times in the last 33 years.  Definitely a weird
phenomenon.
