[CQ-Contest] Heil mics and the Icom-735

Hi Robert

The resistor that needs changing in the 781 is impossible to
get to and I have had the radio mostly apart for other reasons.

Changing the resistor may help but adding mic gain by their
Icom amp (which is the same thing) didn't do much for the VOX
and it was still "fussy".

The best fix that works great is to get their ICOM Heil headset 
which uses the Icom DC voltage to power its electret element.

It's new and now available.

It's time to stop telling each other what great guys we are and breathing
our own exhaust.

1) Get involved beyond posting to cq-contest.  K1IR put together a group of
volunteers to advise on QST editorial policy, for example.  Write your
Director and volunteer to help make budget proposals.  Ask him for the facts
of the matter so that you can formulate an intelligent suggestion.  If you
don't like the process, suggest the specifics of how you would improve it.
Many reflector posts are from senior-level individuals of signicant
experience and responsibility.  I can only assume that this reservoir of
expertise would be welcomed if volunteered.  If you want it done
differently, then say how.

2) Don't like the QST content?  Then generate some!  If you have a problem
with making a lawn chair into a 6-meter loop, then I must assume that you
have some actual ideas for replacing it.  You don't have to be Victor Hugo -
the league has good editors to polish up the article.  Here's some topics -
talk amongst yourselves; "The Gamma Match - Construction and
Implementation", "Amplifer Care and Maintenance",  "Long-Path for the Little
Pistol", "Making 1000 QSOs - In One Weekend".  Start typing.  The email
address for your submissions is qst at arrl.org and the writer's guide is
available at www.arrl.org/qst/aguide.

3) Do a calm and reasoned assessment of where our niche in the hobby is
today.  What are the appropriate technologies to be using both in the
performance, administration, and reporting of the activity?  How can we
really and truly attract new participants?  What was cutting-edge twenty
years ago is pretty old hat now.  If we continue to act as if nothing has
changed, we will only be hurting ourselves.  In Monday's contest department
report, it was shown that, contrary to the loud howls of protest and
portents of doom, requiring Cabrillo format for log submission did not hurt
participation in any ARRL contest.  In fact, electronic log submissions are
up - significantly.  Can we please get a clue, here?

4) Get on the hustings to encourage the casual contestor and the newcomer.
Offer to give a program on contesting to any local club - a how-to, your
Sweepstakes story, a historical review, a travel show about your contest
expedition, photos of all the big multi-multi's you've visited, etc.  You'll
be asked back and recruited by other clubs.  Show how to submit an email
log - even a tiny one.  Tell them about this reflector and about eham's
contesting.com and 3830.  Tell them when their own state QSO party is and
when the next big contest runs.

5) When was the last time you helped somebody get their license?  Are you a
Volunteer Examiner?  All you have to do is read through a simple guide and
take an open-book exam.  Duh.  The Boy Scouts are always looking for someone
to help out with the Radio merit badge.  Does your local library have any
ham radio books or magazines on the shelves?  How about the high-school or
middle-school?

Please don't let your only contribution to the debate be, "Do it just like
it's been done for the past sixty years!"  Whether you agree with them or
not, none of the board members is getting rich off of us and none of them
live in the dark, old house with the Victorian trim and organ music late at
night.  Stop making them out to be nefarious villains bent on the
destruction of our One True Hobby.  Save it for the Enron toads.

I'm not suggesting that we all sit quietly and applaud politely every one of
the Board's minutes and resolutions.  But there has to be some involvement
other than insuring that being a Board member is made to be a thankless
position which receives only vitriol.
