I would say, emphatically, "You're not in MY log, we both need the 
QSO."  You're actually doing him a favor by alerting him, during the 
contest, to a logging error.  If he listens, and works you this time, I'd 
see nothing unethical in his making a note in his log at the time 
saying,"We didn't work him before, go back and delete that first QSO."

On the other hand, if he blows you off it will cost him because of the 
penalty QSOs.  Simple self-interest should produce the right result.
