Although not a contester, Erwin Schrodinger, in his Dublin lectures that led to "What is Life?" used the Morse code as an example of "information carriers" (dits and dahs), in describing his theory that genes also are information carriers.

I read this recently in a new book, "Watson and DNA," by Victor K. McElheny (Perseus Publishing, 2003).
