[CQ-Contest] 1958 flare?

I remember that one.  Ed forgot to mention one little thing.  Those 
6AG7's, being metal tubes, you would invert the chassis into a good 
sized pan of ice water so that most of the tube body was submerged, 
without getting the pins wet.  Couldn't do that with glass tubes.

I was first licensed in 1959 (KN8QLK) and DX was great.  But 1957 - 1959 
was on the rising side of the solar peak when the sun is usually better 
behaved and flares are rare, unlike now on the downside of the cycle.  
The sun does not go quietly into that good night.
