One thing I did notice here is that Icom's stuff has a stereo plug at
the rig side and these have a mono. Does that make any difference to the
rig?

Google G3VGR and look for his level converter.

Super simple to build (a pair of 2N2222s, some diodes, resistors and
capacitors). Works great, using it on my IC756PRO.
