Not sure why there are so many posts about "assisted." It is in the rules.

Bravo CQ (and Doug for pointing this out)! In fact, CQ's rules go on to say, "The USE of DX ALERTING ASSISTANCE OF ANY KIND places the station in the Single Operator Assisted category." (caps for emphasis, not shouting)

So...it isn't if someone tells you about DX. It's all about you acting ("USE") on that knowledge. Also..."alerting assistance" may be "of any kind" and not limited to networks, pre-arrangements, etc. It may present itself randomly, etc. Interestingly, this limits adjudication to ALERTING assistance. Apparently, you can enter as a single operator and receive other types of assistance without issue: food preparation, equipment break-fix/replacement, equipment features (keyers, voice recorders, antenna rotors), etc.

This is a good example of what has been said before about different sponsors having different rules and perspectives. CQ's rules apply only for their events (and this rule is embedded in this particular CQ event). Be sure to check with sponsors before assuming anything. :)

In parting, I continue to wonder how nice it would be to know a little more about your competition's "non regulated" assistence? You score X, they score Y. Where they using computer logging (vs. your paper)? Were they using cw/voice keyers (while you suffer from laryngitis)? Were they at 100 watts (vs. your 25)? Though we may never see such detail in paper-print, this is one of the many features possible through the use of online scoreboards.
