Way back when Moby Dick was a minnow, amateur SSB gear was truly SINGLE side 
band (not selectable sideband).  IF's were in the 9Mc (before Hertz) range. 
The mixing schemes thus made everything below 9Mc LSB, and everything above 
USB.
