5 to 10 seconds is two entirely different values....

If I just called CQ and you take 5 to 10 seconds to answer me, I might be on the other rig answering Tree's CQ. Count to 5 out loud; why wait that long to answer me? I had several guys last weekend that took that long or even longer. No doubt they thought I was an "SO2R" lid. Those same guys used to complain about people not listening long enough between CQ's.

On the other hand, 10 seconds is no where near long enough to determine if a frequency is in use. I might not be on the second radio, I might be copying a guy that you can't hear that's sending an exchange to me at 15 WPM. His exchange could easily take more than 10 seconds.

K3KU writes:> Just now, second time in NAQP (only been on for 3 hrs), answer CQ of BIGGUN. No reply. I call again. And again. No replies.Well - I am the big gun that K3KU speaks of. As it turns out - YES - I wasworkingsomeone on the other radio when he called - but I was all prepared toanswer himon his first call - but fat fingered somethingon my keyboard when he calledand mylogging program hung in a weird state. I can take full responsibility forthat since Iwrote my own software. So - while what he said is true - I believe that the reason for the delayhad more todo with my inability to respond to his first call because I couldn't sendany CW.I believe that K3KU was pretty aggressive about trying to take over myfrequency.Normally - if there is a 5 or 10 second delay - you don't assume that thefrequencyis now yours. I think if you did that going up and down the band - youwould findyourself making a lot of enemies. Also - to correct assumptions - when I am working a QSO on the second radio- Ido not "own" that frequency. The guy who was CQing does.73 Tree N6TR_______________________________________________CQ-Contest mailing listCQ-Contest at contesting.comhttp://lists.contesting.com/mailman/listinfo/cq-contest
