[CQ-Contest] CQ WW Participation?

Seven years ago we were at or approaching the solar minimum. I remember
being at PJ2T for CQWW CW in 2007 and 2008 - on 10 meters we had something
150 and 35 QSOs, respectively.

I hope interest holds up when we head back down the cycle, though I don't
expect it to do so. I for one know that I won't be around seriously in the
SSB tests when the whole world is trying to squeeze into 20 meters at the
same time.

Looking at the CQ WW online database activity trend
http://www.cqww.com/stats.htm shows a marked increase in participation in both modes over the
last 7 or 8 years. Would anyone care to speculate what is behind the trend?
