Hi,

Turn off automatic logging or you will likely get duplicate entries of your of your current QSO when it doesn't end smoothly. Log manually when you are sure a QSO is complete.

In the contest there will be running (CQ) and S&P stations. At the end of the QSO, the S&P station will send RR73 to the runner, who should then respond with

73 or CQ TEST or calling a station who tailended (split) during the RR73 transmission

The S&P station should understand that any one of the above three end means the QSO was good. A 73 isn't necessary, but some transmission is.

[Ed Muns] A transmission following a ‘RR73’ message is “nice”, but not necessary. Once the ‘RR73’ message is printed, the QSO is complete and should be logged by both stations. At that point, both stations have sent their call, exchange and one acknowledgement. A third ‘73’ ack is unneeded. It’s not used in CW, RTTY or SSB. It’s an unintended consequence of the WSJT-X automatic sequencer sending Tx5 (the third ack ‘73’) before triggering the log window or auto-log. This has “trained” most people to think it is required.

The station sending ‘RR73’ should log the QSO and watch carefully for their QSO partner to re-send their exchange. That implies that the ‘RR73’ was not printed. The station printing the RR73 should log the QSO and has no further obligation to transmit.

The running station should always respond immediately after receiving the RR73. It should not take a cycle off and not send anything. Successful running means keeping things going,

[Ed Muns] No, see above.

If you are working non-contest stations with the normal, non-contest protocol, QSOs should end with the S&P station sending 73 as usual. Use TX1 for replying to CQs so as to include the grid loc.

[Ed Muns] Note that it is problematic to call CQ in the daily sub-bands for a contest QSO, that is, outside the WW Digi recommended frequencies. The reason is that many non-contesters answer with Tx2 so you won’t get their Grid Square required by the contest rules and it is very difficult to coax that out of the other station. Instead, just call CQing stations who usually have their Grid Square in their CQ message. Secondly, be prepared to interrupt the auto-sequencer to send a SNR message to the non-contester and probably a third ack (‘73’ message) so they feel the QSO is complete.

Good luck and 73,

Ken, AB1J
