[CQ-Contest] play with pay?

in my youth i have traveled to the cook islands for a CQWW and always
appreciated all contests being free. 

now the main contest i participate in is called the "novice rig round up"
all 75 watts input and rock bound. the officials do request a donation to
keep the contest  going, and i respond each year with a few bucks
