Actually, for ARRL DX, it is not clear what the rule is on soliciting contacts through non-amateur means.  Unfortunately.  However there is a clear prohibition of using the internet in non-assisted.  So uniquely for this contest, not CQWW or WPX, it could be about assisted vs non-assisted.  CQ WW and WPX have clear DQ rules on soliciting contacts through non-amateur means.

Uniques are one possible measure, but I don’t think it alone is sufficient.



W2RE operating from ME and being very loud into Europe is going to have uniques.  A unique being define as a callsign that only appears in the W2RE log. Uniques will be found in the W3LPL and K3LR logs as well. The difficult part is determining how many of those W2RE uniques were derived from the social media aspect.  And it is also possible that some of those stations drawn in by social media went on to work others and thus were no longer uniques.



The real test would be a correlation of uniques in the log with Facebook users viewing the stream.  Not sure how you would do that.  It would make an interesting research project to help understand more about the game we play.



Note: I am not making this about the “advantage” determining the winner of a close race.  W2RE has a rather commanding lead on the 3830 scores. It is also not about being “assisted” or “non-assisted”.  It is only about using non-amateur means to solicit contacts.

Unique QSOs in the W2RE log will provide a measure of the impact

I am in favor of big stations and remote operations.  Live streaming so
others can hear what it sounds like is also good.  Promoting ham radio and
contesting using social media is great (and needed)!

I share the concerns about when the live PR effort bleeds into soliciting
activity for the station doing this.   The rules are fairly clear that use
of non-amateur means to solicit contacts is prohibited (written back when
people would use the telephone to get multipliers on the air).

In this case, it is impossible to measure the impact or harm.  I.e., we
don't know how much it helped the score or if it would have changed the
order of finish.  Even so, the rules are the rules.  It will be up to the
sponsor to decide where they want to draw the line for their contest.

IF you watch the video, you will see broadcasting of frequency on the
sidebar chats being displayed - self spotting.  Using a chat room.  And by
asking people on line to share the feed with their friends and get on and
work him - he is soliciting contacts by non-amateur means.

I would suggest that anyone curious take a listen to the live stream
recording on YouTube and look at the interaction Ray has with the "live chat
room" on his website with the contacts being made.

Asking people to look for him on the Cluster to see where he is.

Even as an assisted operation, it demonstrates numerous rules violations as
recorded.
