I use split on 40 meters. That was before the new band plan and continue to do so today. Definite reduction of QRM in the US band.

Split operation is fine for a DXpedition, but NEVER in a contest. It is
incredibly selfish. I won't work anyone who is working split in a
contest. Indeed, doing so should be grounds for DQ.
