[CQ-Contest] [yccc] Unusual prefixes, suffixes and calls

Living in PVRC land allowed for some interesting visitors to show up on the repeater.
One day, JY1/W3 popped in. He was enroute from the State Department to the PVRC downtown luncheon. Just a normal chat with Hussein. He’d also fly his own plane for some of the visits. I suppose if you are the King, you can assign yourself a nice call.
When Pres George W Bush was in, he could have gotten W as his call. “CQ Contest this is W, just W.”
I wonder if Sen Goldwater would have had a radio at the White House? He had a Big Bertha back in AZ. He sponsored W3USS in the Senate office building. K3ZJ operated there a lot. The antenna was a vertical on acres of copper roofing. That station has gone QRT now that the sponsor has departed.
I recall working 5VZDB. Same thing, no digit. He was worked on a short middle of the night 20 Meter opening that’s there with higher sunspot numbers.
On some of the nature shows, the field crews have HF antennae on their vehicles. The current Wildlife in Malawi has a vet who can dart animals from a moving helicopter **. They haven’t shown the helo. I’m trying to see if it has a 7Q call or one from a neighboring country.
Many of the wildlife collars seem to be in the VHF region. The tracker has a 2 element beam. One collar installed has a GPS uplink, so they know where the animal is several times a day. It’s odd that the collar just sends a ping. Sending a Morse Code letter would allow them to know if it’s Mamma, Daddy or one of the kids.
** The vet said her father taught her how to shoot when she was a kid. I think she grew up on a ranch.
The Malawi group does not have HF on their vehicles. I’m not sure how good cell coverage is.
73,
Ray

I remember working 5VZGH (Togo) back in high school. (No second digit to
separate prefix from suffix.) Pretty sure I still have the QSL.
