Q: I work a station and they do not know their CQ zone or they give me a serial number, what should I put in the log?

Log the zone based on their location.

Q: A station gives me a serial number vs. the correct CQ Zone in their exchange. What should I log?

You should always log what you receive. Stations sending incorrect exchanges (e.g., serial numbers, ITU zones, etc.) are flagged by tbe log checking software. In this case as a result, you will not lose the QSO.

Jim,

“Dumbest contest” is a little harsh.

Nevertheless, I would point out that at least half of the contest’s participants are non-USA operators and indeed have to correctly copy the exchange/zone for the US guys they work. And, you’d be surprised how many US guys get zones wrong in their logs.
