It would be best if CT just left well enough alone. There are just too 
many printer types out there, with different command sequences, to make 
it practical to support mode switching reliably.

If anything, there should be no wired in escape sequences. If the need to 
support compressed printing from within the application is really that 
great, have a "preferences" section where the user can enter the 
appropriate control-code sequences.
