I will tell you Robin, that TS-790 is a fine rig on two meters. I used one
that I borrowed during a contest a few years ago and I really liked it. The
only two problems it has and the reason I don't own one is 1)no DSP and
2)the digital interface was optional in the Kenwood rigs of that era and
good luck finding one now. The DSP in my book isn't that big of a deal but
the lack of a digital interface is a fatal flaw for someone who operates
multiop. Someone (maybe K4SZ) told me that there was a company making
aftermarket digital interfaces for those older Kenwoods. Piexx? You might
want to check into that. The other alternative and the way I always went
was the HF rig and transverter route. I always used K4SZ's DEMI transverter
and either my FT-920 or FT-1000MP. Bob and/or I could set you up with that.
What I would really like to see is a DEMI transverter and a K2. I think
that might be the real kick ass setup. Anyone got a K2 they would like to
loan for such a trial? For big iron on 2 I have the Commander II which will
give you 600-700 Watts out with 25 Watts of drive or if you can come up with
more drive power (40 to 50 Watts) K5AND has a Lunar Link two 3CX800
amplifier that would give you a KW+ out. I will be glad to make the
Commander II available if that is the route you want to go. Let us all know
what you decide.
