Sherman is right on target. Logging the dup's, especially when things
are busy, is a good thing. Trouble, and possible disqualification,
happens only if we try to claim credit for the dup's. The Cabrillo
file does not have any claimed or unclaimed flags per contact record.
This caused quite a bit of discussion on the HF contesting reflectors
when it was introduced. The Cabrillo file does have a place for
claimed score. If a log tries to claim scoring credit for ALL
contacts, including dup's, it will be more stringently examined.
Another way to look at - What if we get someone that comes to call us
for a duplicate contact. We work him, and log him a second time. If we
had time, we might have looked up our first contact record with that
station and given out the previous contact info as well. If that
station reviews their log and decides that the first contact was valid
and deletes the second contact, neither log will get a penalty as long
as no station is claimed for multiple credit per band. If we had
deleted the first entry as a dup based on the second contact, then
both of our logs get a penalty by having a Nil. Ouch! -- *** LOG THE
DUP'S!!! *** --
One of our bad exchange information entries was simple fat fingering.
There appears to be a second callsign in the grid field. That means we
likely lost two contacts plus a penalty of an additional contact.
OOUUCCHH! Accuracy counts. There will be a test.
Our uniques rate is likely a bit higher due to our outstanding
altitude for being so far south-southwest of the prime contesting
activity. We literally comb through all the surrounding grids and pull
out quite a few casual contesters. I will see if I can get a list of
the uniques. Some of them may not be valid contacts, but they are
allowed to remain as they are plausible when compared to the FCC list
of issued calls. The contacts that are truely valid represent
stations/operators whose interest in VHF+ should be encouraged. These
stations could become our bread and butter every contest, especially
if they add bands.
This is a really good discussion. I hope we remember these lessons
well when we get back to the mountain in June. I am really curious
what the September LCRs will look like...
Later,
Brian
