Dear Fourlanders, and other subscribers to the reflector:

The following message announces the reincarnation of a local repeater here in Western North Carolina. Subscribers to this reflector may find the following information useful for one or both of the following reasons:

The subject repeater should be accessible from parts of Western NC, Eastern TN, Northeast GA, and Southwest VA.
The subject repeater will likely be useful for folks traveling to Mile High Campground for the upcoming contest. While some of the W4NH gang have used this machine before, those coming from GA should discover improved coverage, which should begin around Franklin NC, and continue to the contest site with few dead spots. Those approaching the area from TN should find coverage beginning just before exit 20 on I-40 and continuous to the contest site, and those approaching from SC on I-26 should have pretty solid coverage starting in the Hendersonville NC area. Once at the contest site, you should be able to work this repeater with a few milliwatts and a wet noodle antenna.
As mentioned below (you might want to see the details below), I suggest setting your radios up for PL operation (rx and tx) with a 94.8 PL. Users set up for PL decode may not hear the courtesy beep (also mentioned below).

I look forward to seeing many of you on the mountain during the upcoming contest!

  N4DTR/R back up! 147.39+ 94.8 PL

After a hiatus, the N4DTR repeater is back up in Haywood County on 147.39. Improvements to the repeater system should improve performance, especially for most potential users outside Haywood County. On Thursday morning, there was a QSO on this repeater between a ham in Asheville and one in Franklin!

The repeater is currently operating in carrier squelch mode for evaluation purposes, but will likely be switched to PL operation in the near future, using a 94.8 Hz PL. To avoid re-programming of radios, potential user might want to program their radios to send the 94.8 Pl tone.

The repeater is transmitting the 94.8 PL, even while in carrier squelch mode, and will most likely continue to do so. Therefore, users with radios that decode PL as well as transmitting it might want to consider programming this as well. Users who program PL decode on their radios may discover that they do not hear the courtesy beep from the controller. This is a known issue, likely to be addressed in the future.

Hams in the Western North Carolina area are invited to use this repeater. Work continues on completing and refining the installation at the repeater site. For this reason, the repeater may be unavailable for hours at a time, most likely from now until Monday, June 3. Signal reports and questions may be sent via email to W4SKI at paul at mtnlist.com.

  Tnx & 73 de W4SKI
