Subject: [Fourlanders] Brian's Big Diesel Generator

I have been diagnosing the generator today. At the moment, it is a bit
grim. There are atleast two traces burnt on the control PCB. This PCB
has a dip socketed EPROM and self contained battery backed RAM. The
burnt traces are ground lines that are related to user defined input
sensors. I still need to remove a soldered on ground plate to see if
there is further visible damage.

It looks like my worst fear was true. The power connections modified
by the previous owner of the generator left the end of a bolt sticking
out of a piece of heat shrink. This bolt was connecting two wires
together with the bolt and had constant 12VDC on them. I think this
hot end of the bolt was laying on top of a terminal strip in the
overall control box. The terminals where I had seen it laying were the
gound connections for the inputs as noted above.

Does anyone have an EPROM reader/writer? I am guessing the EPROM is a
27256 or 27512, but I will need to lift the label off to make sure. I
may want to see if the EPROM is still readable as part of the
diagnostic process.

It does seem possible to hotwire the generator. It looks like I could
do it with two toggle switches and a momentary switch. The functions
seem to be heater/glowplug, fuel pump and starter. It looks
straightforward, but I want to read through the diagrams a few more
times to be sure.

Bottom line, break out the old gas generators. Change the oil and
check them out. I will do this with "big hos" this evening or
tomorrow.

I will keep the group advised,
Brian
