I'm new to "non-FM" VHF/UHF, although I've been licensed for 31 years :-)  

May I visit the contest site for a few hours? (Assuming that it doesn't take
4-wheel drive..)...I live about 10 miles SE of Asheville, and know roughly
where Soco Bald is..I'm sure I can find it.
