[Fourlanders] Explorer Update

I had a solenoid replaced in the transmission of the Durango about 4 months ago at the DEALER. Cost less than $240. They're all buried in the transmission - that's where they live. By dropping the pan the valve body is accessible, and the solenoids are changed out.

Of course the labor and parts for a new transmission carry better margins for the garage. Time to find a new mechanic.

The price I was quoted was for a Ford remanufactured transmission ($2,500)
and $500 to remove the old one and install the new one.  I understand what
you are saying.  If the solenoid is located buried deep in the inner guts of
the transmission then it is what it is (I love that Bill).  I would like
someone who would know to tell me that though.

The problem is, that to get to the solenoid, you probably must disassemble
most of the transmission.

If you're going to do that, might as well rebuild it.

The price seems a bit high, though.  I had a local guy do the one in my 95
explorer for about $1700 a few years ago.  That was removing, rebuilding,
and installing my transmission, not a rebuild from who knows where.  The
tranny ran well until the wreck.

I talked to my mechanic again today and he said that a solenoid in the valve
body internal to the transmission has failed.  The only option he offered me
was a rebuilt transmission for $3,000.  Not an option I am likely to take
with an almost 9 year old vehicle with over 150,000 miles on it that, by the
way, is running just fine.  A couple of questions for the brain trust on
here.  It seems to me that a failed solenoid is a damn minor reason to
replace an entire transmission.  Do any of you know of anyone who actually
works on transmissions?  At the very least I am going to want a second
opinion on this so any suggestions of a good transmission shop in the area?
Any other suggestions or ideas on how I should proceed?  I would really like
to keep the Explorer going so we will have another vehicle available for
towing but not if it is going to cost me $3,000.
