Yes, this is true, but 5 years is a bit soon to replace them. But I would definitely not let them go more than 10 years before replacing them. The tire could start to separate internally so that you can't see it. Dry rot is only one thing that could happen and the rot could be occurring internally where you can't see it.

I recently replaced the tires on my '68 Charger since the date code showed they were over 10 years old even though the tread was still good.
