I am John Hedley Hooper, son of Morgan Hedley Hooper and grandson of William
Hedley Hooper. I have traced the UK branch of my family back to 1720 when
the name was spelt Huyper. Thomas Huyper married Martha Bruer from which our
lot descended. I cannot trace any Hoopers or Huypers prior to Thomas in 1720
and as there were no other Hoopers or Huypers in the weaver village of
Hilperton in Wiltshire prior to 1720 and as both Bruer and Huyper sound Flemish to
me I assume Thomas Huyper's parents were Flemish weavers who fled the
Lowlands after the abrogation of the Treaty of Nantes. If any one has a better
idea I would love to hear about it. Incidentally there are hordes of Hoopers
who legged it to the USA in the early 19th C. I have quite a bit of information
about them. William Hedley Hooper went to USA to earn enough money to
marry my grandmother. However, having convinced my great grandfather that he had
enough money to marry his daughter, his daughter (my grandmother) refused to
go back to USA with him so they settled in Barry, South Wales. Any further
information most welcome JOHN HEDLEY HOOPER
