Dad's
Comments: This was Melanie's third Kid's Day Radio Game.
Searching & Pouncing, she worked 6 QSOs in about 30
minutes and told me that trying to find people was
too much work and waiting. I explained how she
could find a clear frequency and claim it as her
own and call CQ for others to find and call her.
She tried it and liked it and continued CQing for the
duration of the game, working 15 more QSOs. I called
and crowned her "Queen of the Frequency." Melanie
worked more boys (18) than girls (3). Initially, she
didn't want to play, because her brother (now a
teenager) wasn't interested. I simply turned on the
radio and cranked up the volume so the activity could
be heard while we were doing other things. After a
short while Melanie asked if she could tune the radio
and listen to others but not transmit. I gave her
permission. About 10 minutes later she asked if I'd
take a break and help her play in the radio game for
awhile. I did. She began to enjoy herself.
Daughter's
Comments: "This time was more fun than the last one because in
every case, but one, I had to call only once and the
person would come back to me. Dad's new antenna
seems to work better than the other one last year.
The most unusual color was Laser Lemon from K7YA.
I liked the story my dad told me about Einstein's
Cat, when I asked him to explain how radio works.
Albert Einstein put it this way: 'You see, wire
telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You
pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in
Los Angeles. And radio, said Professor Einstein
operates exactly the same way. You send signals from
here and they receive them over there. The only
difference is that there is no cat.'"
Son's
Comments: Christopher says he didn't play this time because
"at age 13, I'm not a kid anymore; and telling people
my favorite color is uncool." He suggests such events
be called "radio games" because people are playing
games on the radio. He explained (paraphrased) that
in his mind "an OPERATING EVENT sounds more like work
than play and a CONTEST sounds like entering an event
where Ed McMahon randomly selects a winner, which
requires little or no special knowledge, strategy or
skills." He said, "If I can convince my friends that
this is something cool to do, I'll invite several of
them over to play in the next one, with me."
Dad's
Comments: It's s been said that PERCEPTION IS REALITY. I don't
mind switching to RADIO GAMES and dropping the
favorite color; but, they're still KIDs to me!
Tip: Announce the next KID'S RADIO GAME in QST, CQ and
other appropriate magazines (in addition to the
CQ-Contest reflector).
I have observed all competition rules as well as all regulations
for amateur radio in my country. My report is correct and true
to the best of my knowledge. I agree to be bound by the
decisions of the BARC.
