Greetings,
Here are my results for the Phone QRM-fest (er-Sweepstakes) for this past
weekend. I had to feel sorry for anyone running low power this weekend
because getting through the incredible amount of noise had to be really
frustrating. My ears are still ringing!! My sincere thanks go to Rick (W6SR)
and Karen Samoian for being such wonderful hosts.

My contest effort got off to a really slow start when I received a telephone
call five minutes before the start of the contest to inform me that my
father was in critical condition and was not expected to live for more than
a few days and that I needed to fly to Ohio as soon as possible. In the
meantime, my son is scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning and I can't go
anywhere until he is stabilized (this is starting to sound like a soap
opera). So - here I was - now fully drained of all the adrenallin that I had
built up getting ready for the starting gun to go off. As a result, I had
the absolute worst first hour of SS Phone operating ever and it took another
several hours to let my mind process what I needed to do next week before
getting back fully into contesting mode.
As far as the contest goes - finished up the sweep Sunday afternoon when
VE2AWR answered one of my CQs (what will we do without him?). Prior to that
- I broke the VO1TA pileup shortly after working VY1JA. In the end - I
worked all sections at least twice. I found the QRM levels to be really
frustrating. Every time that I would find a suitable run frequency, it
wasn't all that long before others (usually from 9-land) would squeeze
above/below me to the point that the S meter was almost constantly at S9 or
better at all times. Not to mention someone asking me to move because I was
bothering their 20M net 2 khz down, the joker who was recording my CQs and
QSOs and playing them back on my run frequency (first time I ever QRMed
myself), or the W4 that called CQ and carried on a conversation about NFL
football on 7243 during the peak of 40 meter SS activity early Sunday
evening, 1 khz down from my run frequency. Overall - I don't recall ever
asking for so many fills during a phone contest before. Thankfully - Rick's
FB station ran flawlessly, the packet spots were great, and Writelog ran
just fine (although we had a few setup issues to deal with early on). My
thanks to the creators of the Master.dta file which was a real help during
the course of the contest.
Judging by the number of NCCC calls on the air - I'm sure that we did great.
On the other hand - it appears that SMC caught on to our plan based on the
number of U class callsigns from IL-WI-IN sections combined with the low Q
numbers on Sunday from these stations. But that's OK because Rusty's plan
has elevated SS operating to a whole new level - especially on Sunday. Just
hope that ARRL doesn't outlaw our methodology.
So - let's bring on the next challenge for NCCC and keep KBing! (or is that
BKing??)
