Bob's exactly right. I just got a new Yaesu G-2800DXA which comes with 120
feet (40 meters) of control cable with the plugs already in place. One is a
big barrel plug that attaches to the rotator, and the other end is a molex
plug that plugs into the controller. Well, 120 feet wasn't enough. So, I had
already bought 200 feet of control cable. I didn't bother trying to remove
the molex pins, etc. I just spliced it right onto the end of the new cable.
I did, however, remove the wires from the barrel connector and solder it
onto the new cable. That's the plug that sits atop the tower, and I didn't
want any problems down the road. But splicing the molex plug was a no
brainer. That splice is right behind the controller, not subject to the
weather, wind stress, or any other forces likely to threaten its integrity.
For Field Day, I would just go ahead and splice the connectors onto each end
of the cable and not bother with removing the pins, etc. Again, Bob is
giving you sage advice.
