_____________________________________________________
Candidate for Vice Director of ARRL Pacific Division
I am Rob Brownstein, K6RB. June marked my 49th year of active
ham radio operations. During those years, I operated CW,
phone, and digital modes. I ragchewed, chased DX and
participated in various contests. I operated in Field Day and
joined local amateur radio clubs in the various places that
I've lived and operated. In other words, I have enjoyed a
broad swath of all the things that ham radio operators do.
Your choice for vice director will serve for the next three
years. My opponent wants you to choose him because he has
focused almost exclusively on emergency communications, and
says that is the primary function for which ham radio is
recognized and affirmed.
Most non-hams do get their impressions of ham radio from news
stories about hams stepping in during emergencies. But, is
that the only thing we do?
All of you know there's a lot more to ham radio than that,
and while emergency communications is a wonderful service to
our communities, it is just one aspect of our hobby. To be
fully represented, you need someone who knows what you do,
whether it's HF or VHF operation, DXing, contesting,
ragchewing, or experimenting. And I've done them all.
Who is better suited to serve the diverse needs of today's
Pacific Division amateurs? Do you want someone who does one
thing and reads about the others? Or do you want someone who
does pretty much all of the same things you do? My opponent
and I are both good people, and we want to do what's best for
this division. We just come at it from different places. He's
a specialist; and I am a well-rounded generalist. If you want
broad rather than narrow, please give me your vote.
73, Rob Brownstein, K6RB
