Silent Key
______________________________________________________________________

Well-known Italian DXer I2UIY, Paolo Cortese, has become a Silent Key,
about a month after a brain hemorrhage, at the age of 48. Paolo was a
member of the CQ World Wide Contest Committee and Contest Hall of
Fame. He represented Italy in the first WRTC, World Radio Team
Championship, in Seattle in 1990. Paolo created the EU sprint. He
was the Italian QSL Bureau Manager for many years. He recently took
over the CQWW RTTY log checking and had several CQWW records. Funeral
arrangements are pending. One of the recent highlights of Paolo's
life was traveling with K6KR and W6OAT from VE7, British Columbia,
across the Trans-Canada Highway as far as VE3, Ontario, then into the
U.S. at Niagara Falls, ending up at the Dayton, Ohio HamVention.
After "Dayton" they headed back to Seattle. The visited with many VE
and W contesters during the trip.

One of Paolo's friends, I2EOW, says friends should not telephone
Paolo's mother, who he lived with, because she does not speak English.
But you may write her at this address: Liliana Cortese, Fr.
VALLESCUROPASSO, 5 27040 CIGOGNOLA (PV) ITALY.

Another friend, K7SS, notes that WRTC 1990 was Paolo's first airplane
trip. The Italian team stayed at K7SS's home. Both K7SS and G4BUO
mention Paolo's sense of humor. `BUO says Paolo was a real radio
enthusiast, and funded the EU Sprint certificate program from his own
pocket. KL2A says when he got his license in 1983 in Alaska and ran
Europe pileups all night long, I2UIY was always there. He remembers
Paolo and WRTC teammate IK2DVG saying in Seattle, "A contester must
eat!" and stopping in the middle of the WRTC event to laugh, talk, and
eat pasta. He says, "Paolo had the ability to make us laugh until we
cried."
