Hi Jon,
I have had a FT-2000 since January 2007. There have been a number of improvements made to it since then through free downloadable software and we have been told that there is a new major download coming later this fall.
I use it as my primary radio and have a FT-1000MP sitting on the shelf as a backup radio. Here are my feeling on some of the issues that have come up with it.
A. Roofing filters. I believe that the 6KC roofing filter is tighter than the 3 KC one. I understand that there are some circuit design changes in the FT-950 witch give better filter perfromance than the 2000 does. I leave mine in the 6KC setting.
B. Audio. I use the Heil Proset with the DX element and get many complements on my audio.
C. Ease of updating software. Very easy to do and if you use a shorting plug plugged into the PGM port on the back of the radio, it takes less than 5 minutes to do a install. Very easy and quick.
D. I find that there are a number of features which allow you to improve weak signal reception on both SSB and CW and its a question of learning how to set the paramenters and how to use them. i keep a EXCEL spreadsheet with all the paramenters listed, both default and what I use, so it is easy to reset them after doing a software upgrade. Only takes a couple of minutes.
E Primary receiver is digital and uses DSP filters. I think that they work well. Secondary receiver is analog and has one option slot for a narrow CW filter. I installed a 300 Hz filter and have no regrets. Glad I did not install the 500Hz filter which was the other choise.
I am very happy with the performance of the radio using it for both contesting and DXing. If you have any more questions, give me a call and we can discuss further.
