First, huge thanks to a great crew of guys who helped out last
weekend: W3YQ,
W5WZ, AA8OY, K8BL, K8MR, K8NZ, N8TR, W8CAR, W8WWV, WB8K and WT8C. Much to
my chagrin, after the most ambitious summer project here yet -- tearing out
the entire basement for an interior re-do, I was not as close to being
ready for the contest as I'd hoped. The new floor was in, the new
electrical was in, the cabing had been re-run through the ceiling, and the
four new operating desks each an elaborate mechanical contraption of its
own (and each with its own independent height adjustment mechanism) ---
those were all done.

But wiring up the computers and the station was another matter, and
although I thought I could finish it in the week leading up to the contest,
I was sorely mistaken. (Imagine the look on the face of Scott, W5WZ, as he
completed his 1200 mile drive from Calhoun LA to operate here, and
discovered that not one radio was on the air.

To the credit of the Crew, everyone pitched in -- hard -- and we eventually
got 20, 15 and 40 on the air. We also got 160 and 80 and 10 on the air but
not before the end of the contest. (And, to be sure, Mr. Murphy made his
visit here -- with some significant outside repairs first required,
followed by some challenging times inside, including replacing a power
supply on one of the radio computers. .... plus some of the little stuff
too.)

So, first, thanks to a superb crew, who came to operate, but mostly just
helped get things back to operation capability here. Having the station
(almost) QRV for CQWW CW is a HUGE relief to me, and a very satisfying
feeling. Plus, I now get to hear radio!

Second, it was wonderful to see our own Octo-op, WT8C. Reno not only
showed up, but also cooked breakfasts AND managed to stick around and work
some guys, even in the then limited configuration.

Third, GL to all who are going to operate in SS this weekend. Best of luck
to all.

Finally, please say a prayer or have a good thought for Mary, XYL (now
widow) of Rev. Paul Bittner, W0AIH. Word is that Paul.... who persisted in
climbing in "unconventional" manners, fell off one of his many towers from
about 60' while trying to adjust a wire he was installing for SS. RIP,
Paul.
