Thanks to all for the replies on the smoke and CO detectors.

Apparently there is no common cure for wireless units other than separation and RF reduction. 

It is hard to know if popping in a bypass capacitor, other than across the battery, would change the effectiveness of the unit.

At this point since I worked VK9WWI I suppose I'll upgrade to less RF prone units or just take out the batteries during contests or DXing.
