It could be that all homeowners there knew about the restrictions.  That
being said, however, it can feel a bit constricting to know that the
technology that has sprouted in the rest of the world over the last three
decades, will be denied to you because of a choice you made decades ago when
it made little difference to you.

Plus the problems with electric blankets, washing machines, automobiles,
etc.

In 1960 who would have known that it would be commonplace for every home to
have several digital computers in it, that cameras would no longer use film,
that most telephones wouldn't plug into the wall ... and that you won't be
able to get any of those things?
